Discover the Gripping Tale of 'Women of Owu' – Only at UEW!

The Theatre Arts Department of the University of Education, Winneba, has become a powerhouse in the Ghanaian arts scene, providing an alternative entertainment option for the university community and the people of Winneba. Over the years, the department has grown to rival the prestigious School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Legon.

For more than a decade, the department has delivered captivating and educational plays, dance productions, and events. These performances, often led by lecturers and final-year students, blend academic mentorship with student creativity, showcasing the department's talent and dedication.

From July 18th to 20th 2024, the department presents a high production: "Women of Owu." Written by acclaimed Nigerian playwright Femi Osofisan, this play explores the aftermath of the 19th-century war-torn Owu Kingdom. It delves into the pain, depression, and agony of the female survivors after the men were killed by the combined forces of Ife, Oyo, and Ijebu.

Directed by Joyce Boahene Bonsu, a final-year student, this production features a cast and crew of over 30 members, predominantly students. Bonsu's leadership highlights the valuable soft skills and leadership qualities theatre students acquire during their training.

"Women of Owu" is particularly relevant in the current political climate, as the country approaches an election year. The play serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of war, urging audiences to reflect on the importance of peace and unity.

I've already secured my ticket for this powerful production. Did you get yours? Don’t miss out–see you at the SCA Theatre at the University of Education, Winneba, from Thursday, 18th July 2024 to Saturday, 20th July 2024!
