The Powerhouse Behind Western Ghana’s Theatre Renaissance, Evans Apraku Boadi
The Western Region of Ghana has historically contributed significantly to the development of theatre in the country. However, in recent years, the region has seen a decline in theatre activities. Enter Evans Apraku Boadi, a visionary dedicated to revitalizing the theatre culture in the Western and Western North Regions.
Evans Apraku Boadi is an alumnus of Sefwi Bekwai Senior High School, graduating in 2009. He pursued his bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), completing his studies in 2014. At KNUST, his passion for acting soared as he took on several stage roles, even sharing the stage with prominent Ghanaian actress Naa Ashorkor.
Currently, Apraku Boadi serves as a lecturer at Ahantaman Senior High School, where he heads the school's drama troupe. Under his leadership, Ahantaman Senior High School has consistently excelled in drama competitions, particularly at the Centre for National Culture’s Western Region Drama and Poetry Festivals.
Outside the academic sphere, Apraku Boadi is the CEO of Headybrains Theatre, a dynamic resident theatre ensemble in Takoradi. His Theatre directorial journey began with Yaw Asare's "Ananse in the Land of Idiots," which garnered significant attendance from students in Sekondi-Takoradi and its environs. In 2016, he ventured into commercial theatre with the play "P=V," an adaptation of the Nativity of Christ.
Headybrains Theatre House, under Apraku Boadi's leadership, has committed to directing at least two plays annually in Takoradi. His vision of fostering a vibrant theatre culture in Sekondi-Takoradi is further evidenced by his collaboration with Cinemazonia as Assistant Director for the 2022 production "God has Failed Me" at Takoradi Technical University. Earlier that year, he also assisted in directing Olawale Rotimi's "Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again," a first for Takoradi Technical University.
He also inspired a clean up Exercise at the Western Region's Centre for National Culture auditorium, where he later used to explore the suitability of the centre for theatrical productions.
Evans Apraku Boadi boasts an impressive portfolio, with over eight plays to his credit in a relatively short span. Some of his notable works include "Bed of Wonders," "The Naked Dance," "After I Say I Do," "Intercloss," and "No Syringe Attached."
Mr. Evans Apraku Boadi is a versatile talent—director, mentor, teacher, poet, actor, dramatist, drummer, and literary analyst. He also contributes as a pundit on NewDay TV’s weekday entertainment show. His dedication to promoting and preserving the theatre experience in the Western and Western North Regions is unwavering.
We also acknowledge the immense dedication of his cast and crew like Mr JM Mould, Mr Jakk, Ampong B, Kofi Asare, Asare the sound engineer, Foster, McClean, Paa Kwesi Alor, Gifty Soglo, Beatrice Kwofie, Raphael Kpobi, the multi tasking DjMexes Lumiere Jnr (Road manager of gospel musician Ewuraba Eesi Musik), just to name a few who have made and still making the dream of Evans Apraku Boadi to make HeadyBrains Theatre House one of the vibrant and functioning theatre house in Ghana.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Evans Apraku Boadi for his incredible contributions to theatre arts and pray he gets the needed support for his projects ahead.
